Cliff Ravenscraft’s Lessons: Mindset Is the Key to Podcast Success

Show Notes: Podcasting the Next Level — NLP.Ep.01.final

Host: Dr. Brad Miller

Episode Title: Podcasting the Next Level — Episode 1

Event Highlight: Leading up to Pod Indy, a one-day in-person and live-stream training event for podcasters on November 7, 2026.

Episode Summary

In this debut episode of "Podcasting the Next Level," Dr. Brad Miller—retired pastor turned veteran podcaster and creator of Pod Indy—invites listeners to shift their focus from technical solutions to the deeper question of mindset. Drawing inspiration from legendary podcast coach Cliff Ravenscraft, Dr. Brad Miller explores the concept that genuine podcasting success is rooted 80% in mindset and only 20% in strategy.

Listeners receive not only an introduction to the unique, limited-edition format of this podcast, but also a preview of the wisdom to be shared by upcoming speakers: Cliff Ravenscraft ("The Podcast Answer Man"), Dave Jackson ("School of Podcasting"), and John Lee Dumas ("Entrepreneurs on Fire"). The episode serves as both foundation and invitation for independent podcasters ready to grow their shows—and themselves—to the next level.

Three Key Takeaways

1. Mindset is 80% of the Game

The central theme of the episode, inspired by Cliff Ravenscraft’s teaching, is that success in podcasting and business hinges far more on mindset than most realize. Dr. Brad Miller underscores that while strategy, equipment, and tactics matter (they form the remaining 20%), it is the beliefs podcasters hold about themselves, their expertise, and their possibilities that form the true ceiling to their growth (04:1905:26). Mindset isn’t just a background factor—it is the engine that either powers or paralyzes one’s creative efforts.

2. Limiting Beliefs Hold You Back

The episode invites listeners to examine and name the invisible beliefs that quietly undermine their podcasting ambitions (06:0007:43). Whether you think, “I’m not really an expert,” or “There are already too many shows like mine,” these beliefs actively shape how much, how fast, and how bravely you act. Dr. Brad Miller explains that recognizing and writing down even one false, limiting belief is the first crack in its foundation and a step toward growth (09:1110:10).

3. Consistent Growth Comes from Inner Change

It’s not enough to binge tutorials, perfect your publishing schedule, or chase the latest tactics; unless your underlying beliefs change, these actions will only lead to short-lived bursts of motivation (07:1208:15). Podcasting success is about consistency, and consistency springs from an internal conviction that you can make an impact. Dr. Brad Miller encourages listeners to start with belief work, emphasizing that this is what opens the door for sustained action and long-term results.

What’s Next?

Stay tuned for the next episode, where Dr. Brad Miller will share personal stories from both himself and Cliff Ravenscraft about taking big risks and making transformational life and career changes (10:4411:38). The journey continues toward Pod Indy on November 7, 2026—a can’t-miss opportunity to learn directly from industry legends.

Cliff Ravenscraft, the Podcast Answer Man, Dave Jackson of the School of Podcasting, and John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneurs on Fire. Your host is Dr. Brad Miller, creator of Pod Indie, now in its fourth season, and a podcaster himself with over 1500 episodes published. Let's get you to the next level.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

Hey good people, welcome to Podcasting the Next Level. And I'm so glad you're here. Before we get into anything else, let me tell you a little bit about who's talking to you about why this short term limited edition show exists. I'm Dr. Brad Miller, retired pastor turned podcaster, and I'm the creator of podindy.com a premier one day training event designed to be affordable and effective for independent podcasters who want to take their show, their business and their life to the next level. This show, Podcasting the Next Level, is really my own take on the teachings of three people whom I deeply respect in the world of podcasting. Cliff Ravenscraft, our keynote speaker@podindy.com Dave Jackson, who will be presenting@podindy.com and John Lee Dumas, who will be joining us with a video presentation.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

You can actually grab a free download of some of the top tips from all three of these legends right now@podindy.com and here's a little something to get you to stick around towards the end of this episode. If you listen for the Easter egg later on, you'll find a way to get a discount on your ticket price. Just know this, this is a limited edition podcast. It expires November 7th, which is the date of podindy.com okay, let's get into today's episode. Episode number one. Let me ask you a question and I want you to actually just to kind of ponder this for a minute. Don't rush past it. What if the thing holding back your show wasn't your microphone or your niche, not even your editing software? Or the fact you really haven't figured out about the favorite or best posting schedule and what if the real obstacle was something deeper and quieter than all that? Deeper and quieter than actually that you actually may believe is even possible for you? The question has to do about the whole reason that your podcast exists.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

This is the teaching that I've learned from my long, ongoing relationship with Cliff Ravenscraft. I've been privileged to listen to his teaching for some time and spent a weekend with him in a Mastermind session. He is known far and wide as the Podcast Answer Man. And Cliff has personally trained over 40,000 people on how to launch a podcast, myself included. And his client list reads like a who's who in the online business and podcasting world. Pat Flynn, Michael Hyatt, John Lee Dumas, Amy Porterfield. You recognize some of those names? Plenty more, of course. So when Cliff talks about things that actually move the needle for a creator, I pay attention.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

And here's the principle of what I want you to get today and what this entire show, Podcasting the Next Level, is really built around. Cliff teaches that what you achieve in business and in your podcast and in life is only about 20% of knowing what to do. The other 80%, the part nobody really wants to talk about too much, is the beliefs, the mindset that hold you back at times about what is actually possible for you. Now, I just want you to let those numbers kind of sink in for a minute. 80% is about your mind, and 20% is about strategy. So a lot of us, I think, have that backwards. I know I did for a long, long time. You know, we kind of binge out on YouTube tutorials, you know, about the best microphone to use and the best strategies and the best way that you could spend some money on some equipment, of course, are we obsess over SEO and titles and other things of that nature.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

We rearrange our publishing schedule several times in order to try to get optimized the best time of year. And those are all good things, according to Cliff. And eventually they can be applied to what you're working on. But none of those things actually touches the actual ceiling of your growth. That's internal, not technical, according to Cliff. Okay, here's what I mean. If somewhere inside you, you're carrying a belief like, I'm not really an expert, I just have an opinion or. And nobody's going to care what I have to say.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

There are already a thousand shows a lot like mine. That belief doesn't just sit there quietly. It shapes the size of the action or inaction of what you're going to do. It shows up in how Long. You let an episode sit in a draft stage. Some people do that for years. I know I delayed the launch of my show, my original show, a long time, months. It shows up whenever you pitch yourself to a guest or to a bigger show.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

And you just kind of think, ah, this isn't going to work. You talk yourself out of it before you even try, before you even make that email or that inquiry. It shows up in your rate schedule when you keep your rates too low, your ask too small, or your reach too limited. What Cliff teaches is that there's a trap here and a strategy about your belief change. If you have a bigger sense of your belief, it produces a burst of energy and possibility for you. When you see yourself in that 80% mind instead of an over 20% strategy, you get excited and you decide to implement new tactics. You go hard for three weeks and then, predictably, you quit. Not because the tactics were wrong, but because nothing underneath them had actually shifted.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

Your tactics must be supported by your belief system. You have to believe that you can change. You have to believe that you can do it. You have to believe that you have the possibility and the capabilities in order for things to happen. Those are the type of things that produce consistency in your show and in your life and in your business, which is going to get you continued growth. It's the difference between a spear, between a sprint and the actual ongoing, everyday practice.

Kristy Stone [:

Hey, before we keep going, have you grabbed your PodIndy Ticket yet? November 7, 2026. Featuring Cliff Ravenscraft, Dave Jackson and John Lee dumas. Starting at $27, it's one of the most affordable ways to level up your podcast.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

Get tickets@podindy.com that's what Cliff teaches, that's what I've learned from him, and that's what we're going to talk about here on Podcasting the Next level over the next many episodes that we're going to putting together leading up to November 7, 2026. So today I'm just going to. I'm not going to give you really even a single tactic to deal with or tip. What I'm going to give you is one bit of homework and I want you to actually do it, not just kind of go through the motions. Here it is. And I got this straight from Cliff. I just want you to write down one belief you currently hold about yourself and your show and your show's potential. That's false.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

That is not ringing true. It's limiting you in some way. Maybe it's my audience is just too small to matter. Maybe it's I started too late, I'm too old, I'm too young, I'm a man, I'm a woman. Maybe it's people like me just aren't taken seriously in the space because of lack of experience, you know, because I don't have the credibility. Take whatever that limiting belief is and write it down, just naming it, writing it down, put it in your phone, put it on your computer, write on a piece of paper, put it on your desk, or put it in your workspace. And just naming it is a crack in your foundation, according to Cliff. That's the start here.

Dr. Brad Miller [:

That's the start of using your mind to get your actions in your podcast, your show, your business, your financial gains, everything, to the next level. And that's the key of what Cliff teaches in taking your life and your podcast and your business to the next level. That's what we're going to do, as we're going to do every episode here in one form or another. How can we get you to the next level? In the next episode of Podcasting the Next Level, we're going to go deeper into some personal stories. I'm going to share with you a little bit about Cliff's own story about walking away from a guaranteed multigenerational career that he had that was basically handed to him and to go build something with zero guarantees. And we're going to talk about what decision, what those types of decisions teach us about how to identify where we are, where we're going, and what the risks are. I'm going to share a little bit of my story too, about how a profound change in my life situation caused me to launch and relaunch the podcast, which I consider my main podcast, called cancerandcomedy.com we're going to get personal. I'm going to share a little bit of Cliff's story, which he shared publicly, a little bit of my story.

Dr. Brad Miller [:
